No SYN ACK reply from VM on virtual wire/VXLAN

$

0

I have two Debian 7 VMs connected to the same virtual wire. When both VM's are running on the same ESXi hosts ping, arp and ssh works. When each VM runs on a different ESXi host in the cluster ping and arp work fine but ssh fails. On the SSH server site I see SYN arriving but the server is failing to reply with SYN ACK.

This is in a nested ESXI 5.5 environment.

vshield manager version 5.5.0.

I'm using vxlan

VMs are debian 7

I'm working with my VMs in Windows and Linux which works fine. However, I always have to change the file path for the VM when switching the OS.

Is there any workaround?

Hi,

Need to know how to fetch the install date of base esxi from Esxi command or from Power cli.

VMWare Fusion 7.1.2 and OS X 10.10.3 - Mac Book Pro 15" (mid 2014) crashes when lid is closed for for more than 3 hours

VMWare 7.1.2 cause the OS to crash when it starts after the lid has been closed for more than 3 hours.

I'm running a Mac Book Pro 15" (mid 2014) with 16GB of memory.

There are 3 WMs with W7 Pro. If any of them are running when i close the lid and wait for more than 3 hours the computers main OX crashes with the notice of Sleep Wake Failure. If VMWare is completely shut down (as well as all Windows OS), then the Mac does not crash when asleep overnight. I have checked the transfer power to VM checkbox and all 3D acceleration options are set to OFF on all the WMs.

Earlier I run a Mac Book Pro 17" from early 2011 and Fusion 6 and never experienced any problems but when i changed to the new Mac Book Pro in February these Sleep Wake Failures came immediately. I have read and tried most of the tips from similar posts on the Forum but with no luck.

Yesterday i upgraded to Fusion 7.1.2 with the good hope that it should solve the problem but unfortunately not.

I think that it definitely must be a Apple problem since the OS not should be able to crash due to any thing a application running on the OS could cause even though I guess that Fusion are doing something fishi since it worked fine in earlier versions.

Does anyone have a solution for these crashes - they are driving my mad?

I have attached the crash log in full.

Hyperic OVA Deployment Issues

Checking to see if anyone has experienced an issues deploying the 5.8.4 OVA.  It would appear the vApp deploys fine but on boot the DB server looks like it has an issue with Dev3 on mount which it claims it is already mounted.  It then runs a disk check and when the script runs for the DB deployment it fails on sector 0?

If I delete and try again same result...

I bought a used HP 360 Server and I installed the HP version of VSphere 5.5.

The problem is that the license is expired and I don't know where can I find the free license.... in VMWare's website I found only the license for VSphere 6 ...

Shared folder with linux

Hello,

I have some virtual machines with linux (Debian) OS. There I have installed vmware tools and enabled shared folders.

I have configured the access to the folders following the instructions at web page VMware Workstation 10 Documentation Center.

Yesterday I have updated the VMWare Workstation to version 11.1.2. In the linux virtual machines I have successfully updated the VMWware tools too. But now the mounted directory as shared folder is empty. I can see no error messages in the vmware.log file. In the WINDOWS virtual machines the feature "shared folders" is working properly. What can I do?

Thanks for help!

Ping works everywhere, TCP/UDP appears unidirectional (no reply)

I have a strange issue in my nested lab.

Everything appear to be connected @ L2 and via ICMP, but 'real' traffic (TCP/UDP e.g. http, ssh, dns) doesn't work if it has to traverse VXLAN i.e. between VMs on different hosts, or to my real network via ESG on edge cluster.

1.) All VTEPs can ping all other VTEPs using MTU 1580, and vcenter GUI ping test is OK as well.

2.) All ARP/MAC mappings etc. look fine, all VXLANs and VTEPs look fine on the hosts. Ping works 100% both within a logical switch (different host), through the DLR (different host) or my real network (via ESG on separate edge cluster).

3.) However, no real traffic works. I did some esxi packet captures on the vnics and I can see the initial SYN egressing the source VM and egressing the destination VM's vnic, but when I try to capture the destination's ingress vnic, no replies are visible. I can ALWAYS however see the ICMP replies! In fact I can see the same thing in netflow.

4.) All firewalls are turned off on the DLR/ESG and I even disabled the firewall component. I even put in allow any any rules everywhere (even though it is disabled LOL).

I'm 100% sure the vms are responding/ports open etc. and since they respond to other vms on their own ESXi this must be the case. These are linux guests and I have tried two different distros just for luck (one is plain ubuntu with firewall off so definitely nothing going wrong at that level!).

Really stumped, anyone have any ideas? If VXLAN was broken surely I'd notice the 1580 MTU pings fail. In fact hosts can ping each other @ 1500 MTU so I'm convinced the MTU is fine.

I can't understand why if the MTU is fine and everything can ping everything, why 'normal' traffic is failing - technically from packet captures it looks unidirectional i.e. I can't see the reply coming back.

And yes, my 'upstream' vswitches have promiscuous mode / forged transmits enabled.

Could this be related to something else in the nesting config? The nested hosts are using E1000E NICs and basically have 2 VXLAN ports connected to a vswitch with promiscuous mode / forged transmits / MTU 1600.

On the actual ESXi config itself, I put each host's two NICs into uplink 1/uplink 2 of the VXLAN dvswitch, explicit failover. Like I said any basic layer 2 issue would result in ICMP breaking, and I would have found an MTU issue with 1580 MTU / host 1500 MTU pings....

Hosts are Vsphere 5.5 and NSX is 6.1, VXLAN is in unicast mode / MTU1600 / DHCP and controllers seem happy / have all the MACs / ESXis see each VXLAN's controller as up  etc.

Windows 2000 server on ESXi 5.5, It's really compatible?

$

I'd like to understand if vCenter 5.5 (ESXi 5.5) environment supports Windows 2000 as guest OS.

According to this document, http://partnerweb.vmware.com/programs/guestOS/guest-os-customization-matrix.pdf , vCenter until to 4.x supports this OS.

But in VMware Compatibility Guide: Guest/Host Search, if I set thiese search parameters:

Product name: ESX/ESXi

OS family name:Windows 2000

Product Release Version: ESXi 5.5 U2

OS Vendor: all

The answer is:

http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/detail.php?deviceCategory=software&testConfig=16&productid=11014&supRel=271,&deviceCategory=software&details=1&releases=271&operatingSystems=50&productNames=115&testConfigurations=16&page=1&display_interval=10&sortColumn=Partner&sortOrder=Asc&testConfig=16

What does it mean? There is support on ESXi 5.5 or no ? Or there is only for Windows 2000 which is compliant to above requirements?

Applications resizing when reconnecting to View 6.0 desktop

We are running View 6.0.1 and ESX 5.5 U2.  Form my PC, which was a 1920x1080 resolution, I connect to a View Desktop and the View desktop (Windows 7 x64) comes in at 1920x1080 as well.  I then open an application like Outlook or IE and it opens in full screen.  I leave the application open and disconnect from the desktop.  When I reconnect to the same desktop, the application is still open but the application is resized and not full screen like below even though the desktop still reports 1920x1080 resolution.  Any idea why?

VMware Tools regression in Workstation 11.1.2

$

Hey all,

Hoping I can reach someone from VMware to report an annoying regression in the VMware Tools shipped with VMware Workstation 11.1.2.

The VMware Tools for Windows 2000 and later have been compiled with an application manifest that references multiple XML schemas within a single tag. This trips over a nasty Windows XP bug:

KB921337: The computer may restart when you add a manifest that has the Windows Vista extension to an .exe file or to a .dll file in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or in WEPOS

The effect is that older Windows XP VMs will immediately crash on loading VMware Tools. The exact set of affected systems is:

  • Any Windows XP system prior to SP2
  • Any Windows XP SP2 system without the KB921337 hotfix
  • Windows XP SP3 is safe (includes KB921337)

This bug was introduced in Workstation 11.1.2. Installing VMware Tools using the windows.iso from Workstation 11.1.1 will not trigger the bug.

I recognise this is a bit of a niche case, but the VMware guest OS compatibility guide states Windows XP is supported at all patch levels, and many people installing a Windows XP VM using older installation media may install VMware Tools prior to patching the OS, and so will encounter this bug. The bug will effectively trigger a reboot loop. As a workaround, you can start in Safe Mode and stop the vmtoolsd.exe process from automatically starting.

Thanks,

[7.1.2]-Windows 8.1 Pro 64Bit Guest Window Icons Corrupted?

Hi,

Running VMWare Player 7.1.2 for Linux on an Xubuntu 14.10 64Bit Linux host

with current proprietary Intel graphics driver installed

with a Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro 64Bit guest with VMWare Player Tools installed.

Everything is great, except for one issue:

When I open an application, the application's window minimize, maximize, and close icons are corrupted?

The window icons still function, but they are not drawn correctly?

My graphic adapter is the following:

Virtual Network Editor - virtual DC leaking onto network

$

Hi,

I've created a windows server 2008 test lab in vmware workstation 11. I've set the virtual network adapter to custom:

virtual network editor.jpg

I've got 2 VMs - windows server 2008 and win7. I've attached VMnet2 to both of these machines and created the domain and successfully joined a windows 7 VM to the domain. Great!! but I have 1 big concern. I've set my domain controller IP to: 192.168.123.10

But I can ping this address from the host machine (laptop). is this normal?? I thought creating above network settings would completely isolate it from the physical network. Have I missed something or configured the network incorrectly? I don't want the virtual VM network leaking in any way to the physical domain. I can't risk having 2 DCs on the network.

vSphere client 6.0 going to internet

Hello everyone , i have a problem with vsphere client 6.0 or vCenter 6.0.

The situation are :

vCenter was updated from 5.5 to 6.0.

I have many networks in my environment .

All networks with internet access, everything  working great .

Some networks with no access to internet ,(firewall denied ) , vsphere client trying to go to akamai vmware cloud probably for some update and not going directly to vCenter server. It cause time out  and client disconnected, after couple of tries vsphere client finally success to connect to vCenter server but everything works extremely slowwwww.

Maybe any one knows how i can disable vSphere client from checking for updates from the internet each time it start ???
