VMware Fusion 7 and Windows 10 Compatibility

$

I run Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro using Fusion 7.  When the Get Windows 10 app appeared, I was pleased, and immediately went to reserve it.  Unfortunately, the app informed me that my system was not compatible with Windows 10 and therefore I could not reserve a copy.  The specific error received is, "This PC can't run Windows 10,"  and the reason given is, "VMware SVGA 3D, Your display won't work."  I find this a bit odd, since when I run the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Checker it says that everything is fine, including the SVGA driver.

I queried on Microsoft's support site, and was told that this wasn't a Microsoft problem, but instead a VMware problem.  They stated that it would be up to VMware to create a driver that is compatible with Windows 10.

Is this something that is in the works?  I'd certainly like to take advantage of Microsoft's offer to upgrade to Windows 10 for free.

Thanks for any enlightening answers.

[WS11.x] Input problem with Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10130

Hi

I installed VMware Workstation 11.1.2 build 2780323 on Windows 7 SP1 64 bit and I created a VM of Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10130 installing its VMware Tools.

By opening the "Power User Commands" menu (Win+x) and clicking on an entry (or by typing its corresponding letter) which opens its corresponding window, two windows are opened on the desktop instead of only one.

Also, sometimes, if I click on the Start with the left or right mouse button or if I press the Win key on a keyboard, no menu is displayed even if Windows is not blocked.

So, how do I resolve these inputs?

Thanks

App Volumes 2.7 Writable Volumes - Behavior in Windows 8.1

$

Hello,

I've been evaluating App Volumes 2.7 on a Windows 8.1 VDI environment, seeing that the release notes now indicate that the agent installed in Windows 8.1 is now supported. The AppStack works great with Windows 8.1 desktops, but I'm having issues with Writable Volumes, with or without in conjunction with Appstack(s). I am testing with Horizon View 6.0.1 with floating non-persistent desktop pool that refreshes on logoff.

So far, I tested with profile_only template and uia_plus_profile template, and noted some issues:

profile_only - Worst case scenario. Start screen pinned apps, especially the Modern UI apps, are broken, showing names like App, AppexMaps, AppexNews instead of the real name, and none of the shortcut works. Also, often times, the desktop shortcuts located on C:\Users\Public\Public Desktop that were captured as part of the AppStack doesn't show up at all. When it does show up, however, this is when absolutely nothing works. Shortcuts become broken and double-clicking has no effect. I can't launch anything, even when using Run command to launch explorer.exe and such, and I couldn't even issue a logoff command. Basically, I get a dead desktop.

uia_plus_profile - Better, but still not working correctly. New profile creation process gets triggered every time. This means user will see the "Hi, We're setting things up for you" animation every time (since it is non-persistent), or "Preparing desktop..." message if you disabled the first-time animation via GPO. Also, not all user settings seem to be preserved - Office 2013 thinks it's launching the first time and shows the welcome window when launched, for instance. The start screen problem still exists here as well.

Anyone else having this issue with Writable Volumes under Windows 8.1?

Thanks,

IOV / SR-IOV / MR-IOV for non-network hardware

I've been looking for real-world examples of this for a long time --

mainly because I'm trying to decide whether to restrict my build-options

to using only components which are all compatible with IOV.

I'm thinking that the constraint would be worth it,

if IOV could provide a significant performance benefit for non-network

peripherals such as storage, video processing, etc. (compared to

passthru / VT-d).

http://www.storage-switzerland.com/Articles/Entries/2010/9/29_Offloading_I_O_from_the_Hypervisor_with_SR-IOV.html ,

http://www.plda.com/white-paper-why-using-single-root-io-virtualization-sr-iov-can-help-improve-io-performance-and

Almost everything I've found about this is in the abstract or inapplicable to

multiple VMs in the same physical host.  Examples:

hypothetical use with HBAs or multiple graphics cards,

http://blog.scottlowe.org/2009/12/02/what-is-sr-iov ,

http://lists.xen.org/archives/html/xen-users/2013-04/msg00126.html ;

academic papers & theses, e.g.

http://cs.uccs.edu/~gsc/pub/master/mkopps/doc/MKoppsReportRev3.pdf ;

conference presentations, e.g.

http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/video/I-O-virtualization-video-SR-IOV-MR-IOV-NICs-and-more ;

hardware positioned between multiple hosts and a single peripheral, e.g.

http://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/poweredge-vrtx_User's%20Guide_en-us.pdf ;

and conceptual support for IOV in the spec for NVM Express.

I did find an actual some physical product which claims IOV support,

e.g. the LSI 3008 chip, which is used in some mobos and LSI HBAs.

I've even found some posts by people who discuss various aspects of

adapters & HBAs which are described as IOV-capable.

But I have yet to find anyone -- certainly not anyone at or below

the level of of "enthusiast", i.e. not anyone with a

non-"enterprise-class" environment or budget -- who discusses

even attempting IOV-based I/O other than for networking,

let alone actually achieving it, let alone anyone with even

subjective descriptions of performance differences.

If non-networking IOV has the great potential discussed in the links above,

can anyone tell me why it seems that no one is actually doing it?

Kihl? Braren? zir_blazer? ScottLowe? Don Fountain? Boesch? John Howard?

George Crump? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?...

Will I be able to reserve a copy of Windows 10 using my Windows 8.1 VM?

$

Hi,

I've managed to get the Windows 10 reservation app to run in my Windows 8.1 VM.

Currently it says Windows 10 can't be installed on this PC because it doesn't have enough RAM (I've assigned the VM 4GB) and also because of the VMware SVGA 3D graphics adapter.

I know that Windows 10 will be freely available upon launch, but will reserving be fixed with a later update or is it best just to wait until Windows 10 gets officially released and then wait for the ensuing Windows 10 compatibility release from VMware?

Thanks, Paul

How to connect the host to the internet via PPPoE connection ?

$

Hi there guys!

I am really new to VMWARE and i am wondedring how i can connect my ESXi host to the internet with PPPoE connection.

I know that the direct connection with PPPoE to the internet is inposible so i have to create a virtual machine and make it router. I hope i understanded that correctly.

So can you please give me any information how i can make the real IP that comes with this PPPoE account a menagment IP for the ESXi host.host

My server have two network cards and i have TWO PPPoE accounts. Right now i have connected my personal PPPoE account to the internet with an real machine router and from there i have pluged an local cable to the first lan card of my host. And this cable gives me the ability to menage my host via ip like 192.168.1.100.

In the other LAN card of my server i have directly inserted a seperate cable which is going to be connected to the second PPPoE account and obtain an real ip like 98.34.12.67(real example.).

My question is how i can make my host accessable for menagment with the real IP of 98.34.12.67 insted of this local adress.

Is it even possible and how i can achieve it, does it have something to do with the firewall ?

Thanks in advance!

ESXi 6.0.0 install Exception

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help. I'm attempting to install a fresh install of 6.0.0 on some new hardware and the install is causing a purple screen of death.

Core Hardware:

- Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SOC MB

- 16GB Ram

- MegaRAID SAS 9341-4i

I've tried various different drivers for the Megaraid and still have the same problem.  By the dump (attached) I am trying to determine the exact driver its failing at.  It doesn't look like the megaraid but I'm not exactly sure.  If the system crashes in this way is there a way to extract logs or get it to dump the logs onto USB somehow?

thanks,

Michael

Hi,

I have done VCP training and looking for certification. But don't have class id. Hence can i get the certification without class id.

Some people says class id is must and some says i can also do certification without class id. If i do without class id then will it be valid ??

Is the candidate ID and class id same ?

Please clear me about this and what is the validity of this VCP-DCV certification ??

Hi people,

I Have Asrock E3C226D2I motherboard and USB xHCI controller on the hosts.

Automated ESXi 5.5 install via kickstart to a specific SAS drive -- fails

$

Hi,

I have a Dell Poweredge C6220II system where each sled has 5 drives in it:   one SSD, one 300GB Toshiba drive, and three 1TB Seagate drives.  I'm trying to install ESXi 5.5 via automated script/kickstart, but I'm unable to get the installation going because it hangs during the ESXi install screen at "Preliminary Checks (0/1)"

I've started off the ks.cfg file with the following:

clearpart --alldrives --overwritevmfs

install --firstdisk=AL13SXB300N,mptsas,local --overwritevmfs

network --bootproto=dhcp --device=vmnic0

reboot

where the "AL13SXB300N" is the 300GB Toshiba drive.

When I check the /var/log/weasel.log file, I see the following:

evolog-pub1.jpg

At the bottom there, you can see that it claims it's unable to open  /dev/disks/naa.50000395c81a7de9.

And yet, when I do an    ls /dev/disks.....

evolog2.jpg

....  it's right there.

Can anyone explain why this install onto the 300GB drive is failing?  The weasel.log file contents indicate that the drive is indeed seen/located, but then it's unable to open the device (despite it being present and accounted for).  Because it can't open the device, it then claims there's no bootable partition to use.

FWIW, I've "prepared"/"formatted" this drive with the following command, in Centos, prior to running the ESXi5.5 install:      dd if=/dev/zero of=dev/sdb bs=512 count=20 conv=notrunc         Basically I'm just trying to blow away the MBR and partition table, so that the drive is ready to be partitioned/formatted by ESXi.

Any ideas would be greatly welcomed, and thanks,

Supra92

Virtual machine Windows 7-32bit on host Windows 8.1 64bit

I'm using VMWare Workstation 8, and I did install it on my new laptop cause my old one (Vaio win Windows 7 Pro) where VMWare WS8 was installed has been stolen a few days ago.

Both with Easy Install and with Custom Install, I try to create a virtual machine Windows 7  using an iso-file, but every time, when powering on it, the program seems to ignore the iso-file declared and starts only with a Network boot from Intel E1000, shows a client mac address an then shows two messages: PXE-E35 – No boot filename received and PXE-M0F – Exiting Intel PXE ROM – Operatin system not found.

My host machine is a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga14 witn Windows 8.1-64bit,

I did also try to create the virtual machine choosing the OS support on a phisical DVD  (burning the iso file on a dvd)  connected to a usb port, but i continue to get the same error.

Someone could help me?

Many thanks and regards.

I need to access some network folders in vmware-host.  I gathered from the Knowledge Base that this is accomplished by logging into My VMware and clicking "Manage Users and Preferences" from the navigation bar at the top of the page.  I don't have such a link on my page.  All I show is "Products" and "Support" and neither tab gets me where I need to go.  Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

mixing ESXi 5.1/5.5 and ESXi 6 in one HA/DRS-cluster

$

Hello Community,

I´m sorry if this question is answered in another thread, but i used google and the community search and haven´t found an answer.

Are there any known issues when mixing ESXi 5.5 and ESXi 6 hosts in one DRS/HA-cluster?

I know that we have to have a look at the virtual machines hardware versions (hardware version 10/11) and the VMware tools version (6) due to compatibility, but are there any other potential problems I´m not thinking of at the moment?

Is this a supported configuration for a longer time?

The background is that we have 10 hosts (all at ESXi 5.1 at the moment) and three of them are not supported to run ESXi 6, only 5.5U2 and will be replaced in the next year.

Thanks in advance for any answers!

Kind regards,

Paul

Hello all,

I saw an old topic from three years ago about the same question. Back then the answer was that Baseline Groups were not part of the powercli snappin.

I've downloaded the latest snappin for vShpere 5.5 and saw it's still not an feature? Is this something that will be implemented on short terms?

Dear All

I have completed my vmware course on the end of May 2015, and I saw the link https://mylearn.vmware.com/mgrReg/plan.cfm?plan=64732&ui=www_cert

It said if I take the course within April 15 - Jun 19, 2015, I can get a 50% off of one of the vcp exam.

However I am still cannot receive any redeem code, is anyone receive the code?

May I know how to get the code?

Thanks a lot

Hidden device drivers causing VMs to stop responding

$

We had an issue in our environment where upon a snapshot/clone/etc being taken of certain VMs, the task failed and caused the VM to disconnect from the network (i.e. stop pinging).  The only way to get the VM back up and running was to reboot its Host.

To cut a long story short I discovered that the VM had a lot of 'hidden devices'.  When I removed these a clone/snapshot/etc could successfully be taken.

My question is... why would the hidden devices cause such a failure during a snapshot (for example)?
