Server down, space issue, stuck at 99% and I'm screwed...

So our Virtual server crashed. The guy that set it up has left the country.  I'm an IT guy but pretty thin on VMware, but I can tell you we have Vsphere 4.1 and I'm able to get into the console. Several other servers are all up and running fine.  This one just won't do anything.  Everything is greyed out since I tried to delete an old Snapshot.  Sitting at the glorious 99%   For about an hour now.  Sure it could take forever. But worse, they're could be more problems when and if it does finish!  And people will be arriving for work in about 3 hours.  Somebody, anybody please help!  Very appreciative and greatful for any help or direction anyone can give me.  Thanks in advance.

Also, found an error in the log that says "Cannot power on Fileserver blahblah01.  A general system error occurred.  No related events.  :-/

Unable to install ISO Image

Hi, I am new to this forum, though I have been using VMWare workstation for a long time. I have a Win 10 Enterprise  64 bit PC in which I have installed VMWare Worksation. I tried to create a virtual machine in it using the iso image of teh same OS version.(1511 64 bit). But after pointing to the iso image during new virtual machine creation and power on,  am geting the below error:

"The 64 bit applocation couldnt' load becaouse your  PC doesnt have a 64 bit processor. " I have attached the screenshot. But since I am running 64 bit OS in host and its is 64 bit processor also. So shouldn't VMWare load the image? What could be the issue? How can I solve this. Thanks in advance.Screen.png

VMware tools not installing; not showing up in "DVD Drive" on host OS's

Hi everyone,

I just started getting into virtual machines and got Workstation 11. Every time I install an OS (I've tried Ubuntu 14.04, Windows 7 x64 (Ultimate and Pro), Windows 8 (Pro), and Windows 10 Developer Preview, and all of these on two separate machines) the VMware tools installation doesn't work. I go to the VM menu, hit "Install VMware Tools" and then it says to check my DVD drive to install it. I've done it before and I know how it should work, but I've attempted this multiple times. I've reinstalled the OS's, resized different things on the VMs, changed every setting I could think to change, and no matter what I can't see the VMware tools installer. The DVD drive in Explorer or File Manager for Ubuntu just shows up blank and says there's nothing mounted.

Anyone have any ideas? Is there somewhere I can download executables for the latest VMware tools so that I can install them manually? I can't even get them to show up.

My two PC specs:

1st:

     4.2GHz AMD FX-4170 quad core processor

     8GB of DDR3 1600MHz RAM

     NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650ti graphics card

     1TB Samsung EVO 850 SSD

2nd:

     3.3GHz AMD Phenom II x6 1100T six-core processor

     16GB of DDR3 1600MHz RAM

     NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 graphics card

     2x 1TB Samsung EVO 850 SSDs in RAID 0

I have enabled and disabled features like AMD-V and RVI to see if those made any difference (didn't think they would) but to no avail. I selected different paths for the CD drive, though normally it's just blank. No matter what, I can't get this to work. Anyone have a potential solution? The VMs are choppy and slow without tools installed.

Remote Console ActiveX HowTo?

$

I'm sorry if I'm in the wrong forum and I'm sorry if this may be a stupid question. I'm more of a Hyper-V guy and I'm just beginning to look into VMware.

I've installed ESXi for testing and the vSphere client application. I managed to create a VM and I'm able to connect to the console of the VM from the client application.

I'm wondering how I can host the remote console ActiveX control and connect to a VM instance (just like I would using the vSphere client). I've found the AxVMwareEmbeddedRemoteConsole component but I have no idea what I need to just simply connect to a console. Is there a documentation or sample App?

I appreciate any help on this?

cheers,
Stefan

Metric Chart displays multiple values, even when I only choose one to display.

I'm trying to create a Metric Chart in a Dashboard.  I put the blank Metric Chart in the dashboard, then hit the pencil for the Metric Chart, then select a Metric, which shows up in the bottom of the window:

When I run this Dashboard and select an object, the metric window shows all sorts of data instead of just the one metric I chose.

adding NFS datastore using pyvmomi

Hello,

if I try to use vcenter's MOB portal (ie: http://x.x.x.x/mob ) I can browse under "host -> configManager -> datastoreSystem-3271” and utilize “CreateNasDatastore” method to add new NFS datastore, ie:

<spec>

   <remoteHost>192.168.x.x</remoteHost>

   <remotePath>/NFS/vcenter-nfs</remotePath>

   <localPath>vcenter-nfs</localPath>

   <accessMode>readWrite</accessMode>

   <!-- optional -->

   <type>nfs</type>

   <!-- optional -->

   <userName></userName>

   <!-- optional -->

   <password></password>

   <!-- optional -->

   <!-- array start -->

   <!-- optional -->

   <remoteHostNames>string</remoteHostNames>

   <!-- array end -->

   <!-- optional -->

   <securityType></securityType>

</spec>

If I try the same using pyvmomi:

        spec=vim.host.NasVolume.Specification

        spec.remoteHost="192.168.x.x"

        spec.remotePath="/NFS/vcenter-nfs"

        spec.localPath="vcenter-nfs"

        spec.accessMode="readWrite"

        host.configManager.datastoreSystem.CreateNasDatastore(spec)

I got following error:

Traceback (most recent call last):

  File "./add_nfs_datastore.py", line 159, in <module>

    main(sys.argv)

  File "./add_nfs_datastore.py", line 154, in main

TypeError: For "spec" expected type vim.host.NasVolume.Specification, but got LazyType

If I stop the script execution before the error then I'm able to inspect host and host.configManager.datastoreSystem variables obtaining:

>>> host

'vim.HostSystem:host-311'

>>> host.configManager.datastoreSystem

'vim.host.DatastoreSystem:datastoreSystem-311'

>>>

So path with that is equivalent to what I get through /MOB...

But why I end up getting LazyType error ??

Thx,

Andrea

Resource Pool Automation

I'm currently being tasked with trying to automate resource pool allocation in our clusters.  Currently our operations team is struggling to size the resource pools automatically, or systems are migrated and the resource pool shares are not reset to the proper amount.  Is there a way I can automate the share amounts based on the memory and CPU for all the VM's in an existing pool.

Example.

Resource pool has 7 VMs in it totaling 100,000 Memory and 10,000 CPU shares.  System is migrated out and now the resource pool needs to be 80,000 memory and 6,000 CPU.  Is there a way to get Orchestrator to do the math for this and edit the resource pool accordingly?

3rd monitor only mirrors after Security update 2015-006

Before updating my mac with the latest security update 2015-006 I was able to see my desktop extended on all 3 monitors (laptop and 2 monitors).  After using the App Store to update Security Update 2015-006, Windows 7 running VM Fusion only detects 2 monitors and the 3rd monitor displays a mirror of the 2 monitors.  This is very annoying and I'm hoping someone has an idea of how to fix this.

What I'm using:

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.5

Windows 7 running on VMware Fusion Version 7.1.3 (3204469)

Increase VMFS capacity on boot from SAN datastore - KB query

$

Hi all,

Query re:  KB2002461. I've successfully increased the VMFS partition size on boot from SAN datastore LUNs using the GUI (rescan and increase), that have their MBR/VMFS partitions listed as "Primary" as per image below (growing the 28.12GB VMFS into 37.12GB) but as part of the prep work, I stumbled across the KB in question.

Perhaps the wording on the KB is incorrect or I'm interpreting what it means in the wrong way, but would like some clarity if anyone can shed any light?

The KB states the following:-

- Datastore extents within a Primary partition and on a non-Local storage device can be grown into adjacent space using the vSphere Client. For more information, see the Changing VMFS Datastore Properties section of the ESX/ESXi Server Configuration Guide for your version of vSphere.

Yet it also states:-

- Datastore extents within Primary partitions on a Local or Boot storage device cannot be grown into adjacent space using the vSphere Client. This is the default layout for an ESXi 4.x and 5.x installation. This article provides steps for growing an existing VMFS Datastore in a Primary partition to fill available adjacent space on the local boot device.

My initial interpretation for the first bullet point was as there was no explicit mention of "boot", I shouldn't be able to use the GUI. For the second bullet point, I thought that as there was mention of a "Boot storage device", it covered any form of Boot storage (USB/SAN/Local) and so I'd have to go through the documented process. In practice however, increasing the datastore via the GUI worked, so I can only assume that in the context of the KB, Boot storage device relates to Local devices i.e those contained physically within the server via a RAID controller and other such devices like USB?

Just interested to find out if anyone else thinks this is a little misleading or that I shouldn't have been able to perform the operation via the GUI.

Thanks

Andrew

Backup with ghettoVCB in ESXi 6.0.0

i changed from ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 6.0.0 2809209

i use ghettoVCB - Script to create a snapshot and copied it to an nsf-Server.

The Parameter of the command nas_create changed in ESXi 6.0.

Insufficient arguments.
Usage: nas_create name nfsVersion remotePath readonly remoteHostNames

Add a NAS datastore.
readonly is a boolean value, 1 for readonly and 0 for rw access.
     NFS Version must be nfs for nfs v3 or nfsv41 for version 4.1 or later

So i tried

     /bin/vim-cmd hostsvc/datastore/nas_create  datastore1/nfs_storage_backup  nsf  192.168.113.54  0  /e/vmsicherung

but i get an Error

  (vmodl.fault.InvalidArgument) {

     faultCause =(vmodl.MethodFault) null,

     invalidProperty= <unset>,

     msg ="Received SOAP response fault from [<cs p:1f2af500,TCP:localhost:80>]: createNasDatastore A specified parameter was not correct: "

vSGA drivers causing poor WPF performance

$

I have been testing multiple WPF applications with vSGA, vGPU, and software only virtual machines and have run into poor performance when it comes to the vmware vSGA drivers.

In WPF there is a grid function that displays a grid of information, scrolling around this grid is painful at best when using a vm with vmware's vSGA drivers.  This is an example of a demo WPF application that displays the poor performance when scrolling up and down the grid on the left hand side.

2015-12-16 11_59_18-Clipboard.png

Has anyone else run into any issues with this?

My assumption is that the poor performance is due to vmware's inability to utilize anything above directx 9, is that correct?

The software only VM actually performs better than the vSGA VM which is what leads me to believe it is a driver related issue.  The vGPU VM performs as good as a physical machine, as expected.

thanks

Eric

vRA 6.2: Changing provisioning storage size

$

We have a bunch of different blueprints for use by different business groups.  All of them are basically the same as far as the template used, initial storage size, etc.  Today I was going to provision a VM with a different disk size, so I went into a particular blueprint, selected the "Storage" tab and clicked the Edit icon to change the size from the initial 8GB to 20GB, but it was greyed-out (it did allow me to change the storage type, though).  I went into another blueprint and it would allow me change the size.  I then went through all of the blueprints and most would not allow me to change the initial size to provision, but some would.  I've gone over all the blueprints, reservations, etc., and cannot see any property or check mark anywhere that would turn this feature on or off, so I'm stumped at the moment.  Anyone have an idea how this feature is turned on/off?  Thanks.

Here is a screen shot of how it looks for the blueprints that DO allow me to change the initial storage size when provisioning:

... and here is one for a blueprint that does NOT allow me to change the initial storage size when provisioning:

Changes in vCA not showing in vRA until the following day

$

Our shop has been using vRealize Automation (vRA) 6.2 in-house for about a year now.  Recently, we set up a vCloud Air (vCA) and were able to create the endpoint, fabric group, etc., in vRA.  We ran an inventory scan on the vCA's compute resource and set up a vApp component blueprint and vApp blueprint with no problems.  While setting them up, we could see the vApp templates from the vCA public catalog.  After they were created, we were able to do a test provision of the vApp, which worked fine.

Next step was to go into vCA (actually, the vCloud Director piece) and start creating our own vApps.  We used the OVFTool to upload one of our existing templates to our org's catalog and create a vApp from it, which was added to our catalog.  No problems there.  However, when we went back to vRA and tried creating a new vApp component blueprint, it did not show our new vApp listed.  So we went to the compute resource and did another scan, thinking this is where the new/changed data on vCA would be updated.  However, after the successful inventory scan, it still only showed the same vApps (i.e., our newly deployed one was not listed).  We tried several more times, but no luck.

So, I came in the next morning, and logged into vRA to check again and magically our vApp template (and associated VM templates) are now listed.  So, my question is how did this occur?  And, more importantly, how can we manually get this to work as I don't want to have to make changes in vCA and then wait for the next day in order to do anything with those changes in vRA?  Thanks.

CloudClient 3.3.1: vra provisioneditem action execute broken?

$

Apologies in advanced if this is not the correct forum for CloudClient issues/bugs.

Version: cloudclient-3.3.1-2966416

I downloaded CloudClient 3.3.1 yesterday, and was trying to run the "vra provisioneditem action execute" command, but it kept giving me an error that the '--id' parameter was not a valid UUID.  I ran this before using the VM name as the id with v3.1.0 and never had a problem.  Even the help says the 'id' parameter can be an "ID or name".  Here is the error:

Version : 3.3.1

*Tip* : You can hit tab to move through commands and arguments

Welcome to the VMware CloudClient

CloudClient>vra provisioneditem action execute --id "mytestvm" --action "Power Off"

Error: The input provided resulted in a REST exception: Invalid UUID string: mytestvm. The HTTP status is 400 - BAD_REQUEST.

Using cloudclient-3.1.0-2375258:

Version : 3.1.0

*Tip* : You can hit tab to move through commands and arguments

Welcome to the VMware CloudClient

CloudClient>vra provisioneditem action execute --id "mytestvm" --action "Power Off"

Success.
