Recover lost VMWare Files after formatted external drive
Hi, good evening.
'Firstly i say sorry if i opened this topic in an incorrect forum. I have searched several topics but can't find any similar issue.
I use vmware workstation with a Windows 7 virtual machine saved on an external drive. I needed to create a bootable pen drive for Windows 10 installation, but accidentally selected the external disk and it was formatted. After that, i have already used various data recovery tools (Recuva, Disk Drill, SysTools Hard Drive Data Recovery, VMFS recovery, etc...) but none of them was able to find .vmdk files.
The problem is, i can find the S.O. (Win7) as file system and i can see all directories and files locate inside the VM. But if i try recover any file, i cannot open it. I see that the files are complete and have dates the last time I used the virtual machine, but I cannot restore them.
Has anyone had this problem or any suggestions on how to restore the files or even the virtual machine?
Thank You.
Regis.
Slow upload speed when using vmxnet3 with macOS Mojave
Hey everyone,
I have a late 2018 Mac Mini with the latest version of macOS Mojave 10.14.4 (18E226) hosting two guests with the Mojave as well. I am running the latest version of VMware Fusion 11 Pro. I ordered the Mac Mini with a 10GbaseT ethernet NIC and would like to use the guests at that speed too, if possible.
In macguest1 I changed ethernet0.virtualDev to "e1000e", which is only gigabit speeds, and in macguest2 I changed that to "vmxnet3", which should have full 10 gig speeds. Then I installed speedtest-cli from Homebrew and the results are really terrible:
in macguest1:
macguest1:~ admin$ speedtest
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Testing from Elisa Oyj (x.x.x.x)...
Retrieving speedtest.net server list...
Selecting best server based on ping...
Hosted by Elisa Oyj (Helsinki) [1.31 km]: 2.075 ms
Testing download speed................................................................................
Download: 919.85 Mbit/s
Testing upload speed................................................................................................
Upload: 743.70 Mbit/s
and in macguest2:
macguest2:~ admin$ speedtest
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Testing from Elisa Oyj (x.x.x.x)...
Retrieving speedtest.net server list...
Selecting best server based on ping...
Hosted by Elisa Oyj (Helsinki) [1.31 km]: 2.087 ms
Testing download speed................................................................................
Download: 806.86 Mbit/s
Testing upload speed................................................................................................
Upload: 1.68 Mbit/s
It looks like download speed is fine in both VMs, but the upload speed with macguest2, using a virtual 10gig interface, has a maximum speed of <2Mbit/s! I ran this test multiple times from multiple ISPs and got the same results.
If I switch this to "e1000e" on macguest2, then the upload speed matches macguest1, so it's not an issue with the VM.
Both have the latest version of VMware Tools installed:
macguest1:~ admin$ /Library/Application\ Support/VMware\ Tools/vmware-tools-cli -v
10.3.2.6765 (build-9925305)
macguest2:~ admin$ /Library/Application\ Support/VMware\ Tools/vmware-tools-cli -v
10.3.2.6765 (build-9925305)
This is a really weird issue and I'm not sure what to test next. Has anyone else seen this on their end?
Thanks!

Hi Team ,

1. i am able to login as admin user . How can i reset root password.
2. Where does it ask for root password at the time of NSX Controller deployment ?
Vorkstation PRO subnets passed on to remote session workstations - NOT running VMWARE
Found an issue that I've tracked back to Nov. 2018.
Where using Bomgar is my remote access service i run VMWARE Workstation PRO 15 on my primary system.
I do NOT use VMWARE for remote access. It is installed and a few times a month i start Workstation PRO and address the issue of the day.
Problem: since Nov. 2018 it seems that each time i connect to a remote system the Sophos firewall logs show the presence of the VMWARE subnets touching the remote system (wrkstn or server).
192.168.17.x and 192.168.52.x
These subnets are industry wise assigned to Apple Xsan which was part of the confusion of searching for the source of why the subnets are reflected in the firewall log (maybe also in the remote system registry).
I also changed the VMWARE subnets and checked to see that the new IP Addresses showed up and yes, that is the case the source is truely my VMWARE installation.
Question is, why are they now showing up on the remote systems?
Why did this start in Nov. 2018 = maybe upgrade to PRO 15??
This looks like a Software BUG.
Tried calling the company support team but could not find my way past the First Line of phone call interferrance therefore I'm here in the community at this time.
Get and Change NSX Edges admin Password via API
Hi team ,
we are using NSX version 6.3.2 . I want to change Edges admin password via API . I am aware of Edges> Action > Change Cli Credentials but i am running into a issue where when i click OK to change password , it takes a lot of time and operation time out .
1. I can't see the password line in when i get the output of API of an Edge .
https:// IP /api/4.0/edges/edge-74
<remoteAccess>true</remoteAccess>
<userName>admin</userName>
<password > test </password > " can i add this line ?"
2 . I was googling that i can Get NSX edges root passwords from /home/secureall/secureall/sem/WEB-INF/classes/GetSpockEdgePassword.sh but there is /GetCliUserEdgePassword.sh as well which i am not able to find in NSX 6.3.2 . is there any way i can get admin password of the Edges.

not sending ctrl+alt+del since ESXi-6.7.0-20190401001s-standard
Hi,
for testing i installed a fresh ESXi 6.7U2 on a host and was wondering why i cant send ctrl+alt+del to a Windows server 2016 and Server 2019 installation.
After that, i install a fresh older ESXi (6.7U1) and tried it again. It was working!
Now i started to install update by update.
ESXi-6.7.0-20181104001-standard - fine
ESXi-6.7.0-20190104001-standard - fine
ESXi-6.7.0-20190304001-standard - fine
ESXi-6.7.0-20190401001s-standard - sending ctrl+alt+del stopped working.
Finally i found out, it works if you use Microsoft Edge but not with Chrome or Firefox.
Anyone got an idea what that is? Didnt find anything about a bug like that.
NAT "auto detect available DNS servers" is overridden by the presence of a disabled (greyed out) preferred DNS server
workstation 14.1.7 on win7
The "auto detect available DNS servers" is the master switch that visually disables manual DNS config. However if a preferred DNS server is still present, despite being disabled (greyed out), it overrides the "auto detect" config and dns queries are sent to it.
ISCSI connection under esxi 6.0 build 13003896
Hi,
I am trying to configure a QLogic 57810 to connect to my QNAP through ISCSI. the server is a Dell VRTX and the QLogic card is in the PCI slot of the Chasis. The blade server see the NIC, I have link led on and activity led blinking once in while. If I go to my 10g storage switch, and look at the port where it is connected, I can see that the switch get the MAC address of the QLogic. Then in esxi, in the network card, the card is available. I create my vSwitch and the vmnic and set it up go to the storage adaptor select the right vmhba go to properties and add the port binding, add the iSCSI server location, close and let esx rescan HBA and once done, no storage available. when I look at the iSCSI initiator in the network configuration, I see Path Status not used
I have tried to vmkping the storage address no reply. I have place a support call with Dell and they had me upgrade the BIOS of the Blade server and the firmware of the QLogic and also upgrade to Dell's latest ESX image on my host. I have other esx server with broadcom netxtreme II BCM57810 and they are working.
Anyone has an idea ?
Thanks.
Horizon View and PowerCLI
Hello everyone.
I'm a relatively new coder to the VM PowerCli enviornment.
And I am trying to code for automation the creation of a desktop pool and incorporate it into a Global Desktop Entitlement.
The pool, will be created from a virtual machine hosted in vSphere, and has GRID enabled.
Now, I do know the key to enable renderer3D, and what the value should be.
But, my problem comes along when trying to add this pool to a Global Entitlement.
I'm getting error thrown out that there is a mismatch with the with the 3D rendering setting between the desktop pool and the global entitlement.
Up until now, I have been using the lmvutil command, which is very clunky to use and very limited.
I'm trying to find a way to do this through PowerCLI without having to invoke lmvutil.
I know that I can get the Global Entitlement ID with the Get-HVPool cmdlet, and what it returns is not practical to use.
So I was hoping there was something similar for global entitlements, but I'm not seeing anything.
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
Thanks.
Update:
OK, so I was testing a PowerShell script that creates a manual desktop pool from a virtual machine on our vCenter and creates a Global Desktop Entitlement, and assigns a user to that as well as the newly created desktop pool.
The virtual machine does have the NVIDIA GRID GPU enabled.
When I run my script, it throws the following error:
Exception calling "Desktop_Create" with "2" argument(s): "ExceptionType : VMware.Hv.InvalidArgument
ErrorMessage : Machine Machine/NzA2ZjhkYWQtYWU2NC00Yjk4LTkxOGEtZjA1ODg1NGY0NTNj/VW5hc3NpZ25lZFZpcnR1YWxNYWNoaW5l/M2VkYzk3NTctZDcwNS00MWViLWJhODEtN2FlNT

+ $desktop_helper.Desktop_create($services,$desktopSpecObj)
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
+ CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [], MethodInvocationException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : VimException
Now, I see that it is coming from the the New-HVPool cmdlet from the module.
And the reason, because it is not enabled on the desktop, but it is.
So I am not sure where it is looking to determine if GRID is enabled on the desktop.
Through the GUI, on the Horizon Connection server everything works fine.
Thanks again.
VCSA 6.7U2 VAMI Update Fails With "Check the URL and try again"
My VCSA can't connect to the update source. Tailing /var/log/vmware/applmgmt/applmgmt.log reveals:

Not sure if that's related. Later I see:

But when I curl to those URL's from the VAMI bash shell, I can retrieve them just fine. What gives? We do use a proxy server. When I refresh the VAMI update page to retry, netstat reveals:

tcp | 0 | 1 contoso:33058 a104-74-67-235.de:https | SYN_SENT |
Oopsie, it's not using our proxy. But curl is definitely using it. /etc/sysconfig/proxy is present and properly formatted per kb article -- both http and https are present. Wat do?
where is my free vShere licence
Morning,
I did download ESXi 6.7 and installed it. I would like to run it as stand alone host.
I am trying to find the free licence key and can not. It used to be available.
Is anything changed and no free stand alone host licence available anymore ?
Or how can find it ?
Thanks in advance.
Vmware Horizon 7.7 Windows 10 slow boot
I recently installed Horizon 7.7
VMware ESXi, 6.7.0, 10302608

When I reboot Master Image it takes 35sec Min but when I restart the Linked clone Image it takes 4 Min.
vCenter 6.7 authentication proxy setup issue
- two new VC deployments using VCSA: 6.7U1 and 6.7U2, not upgrades, both experiencing the same failure
- no VCSA HA or anything fancy yet, just bare minimum configurations
- i enable proxy authentication service but after entering the credential details, it fails to complete the setup
- HTML5 client error: backend script execution failed with error code 1
- Flex client error: the "modify vmcam-config.py" operation failed for the entity with the following error message: null: remote script execution failed
- using camconfig per steps noted here using root account in the shell, error: operation failed with error_gen_failure (31)
- credentials being used to get this going is the same used to successfully join vCenter to AD, so i would assume it has sufficient rights and password is obviously valid
- AD forest/domain is 2008 R2 functional level
- i've tried variances of entering the ID format, by itself (it's in the same AD domain that VC is joined to), using UPN format, using domain\ prefix format
- i only saw one article with the above errors which was concerning VC on a Windows server with NTLM version mismatches which doesn't apply to VCSA
the documentation doesn't mention any other pre-requisites and i'm not at the certificate stage yet. i'm concerned about what AD rights are actually required here as the ID we're using has enough rights to create new computer objects joining the domain in a specific OU, but it's not a domain admin or anything with higher privileges
has anyone had this issue with 6.7 or can point me to any logs where more relevant error information can be found? thx

ESXi starts before storage ready
We had a power failure that took down our EMC VNXe and 3 VMware hosts. When power was restored the VNXe starts up but it takes almost 15 minutes to be "ready" and actively serving up data. The ESXi hosts boot up about 5 minutes. But now we have vSphere booted but no storage. So VMs don't start and my phone starts ringing. I drive to the datacenter, reboot the ESXi hosts and all is well. I've been through this cycle a few times now over the past couple years and it occurs to me now that someone must have figured out how to engineer this better.
Is there a way to get ESXi to recognize that there's no storage and just reboot? Or to refresh itself occasionally so that when storage becomes available everything starts working?
The environment has no other physical machines. So DCs, DNS, DHCP, NTP is all served up by VMs.
We have a UPS but it provides about 30 minutes of power. There's no generator and there's not going to be one so that's not a fix here -- as much as I'd like it to be.
Thanks all!

VMware Appliance Monitoring Service (vmware-statsmonitor) doesn't start automatically
I'm not really sure when I started, I think with 6.7, but I realized it when troubleshooting automatic backups couldn't be setup.
Every time I restart the VCSA, I have tu manually start VMware Appliance Monitoring Service through the Appliance Management UI, or through the console. It starts with no issue manually, but not at boot.
The service is correctly set as Automatic.
Not sure where this service is logged, any idea?
