ESXi ZOTAC EI751

Hi all,

Note that im a new to this scenarios.

I have this ZOTAC with an USB Drive that was 4GB and only 3 were used. And now iv got the following error

I bought a new USB driver and try to install/fix/reinstall the vSphere that we have it on.

One Questions is what is on the USB drive that is 3MB and allows the ZOTAC to boot up the vSphere?

 

The next question is how to fix it?

I already download most of the images (iso,zip,vib) and try to make a bootable USB with unetbootin-windows-657, but without success. Some of the error were: "Checking Machine Error" and the new one iv got trying the VMware-VMvisor-Installer-201701001-4887370.x86_64 was the following:

ESXi 6.5 Storage issue

I cannot get VMware to recognize a RAID 5 SSD array from within the management console.  It doesn't show any available datastores exist.  If i run the command "esxcli storage nmp device list" it does show the storage array there but does not show it in the console.  I have a separate RAID 5 array from the same RAID controller that has standard SATA drives and that array does show up properly within the console.   Anyone have this issue.. Any suggestions?

Kernel panic in OSX guest on Fusion 10.0.1 when configured for 3 or more CPU's

I have had a lot of kernel panics when booting OSX guests if I configure 3 or more cpus.  It never panics with 1 or 2 cpus, rarely happens with 3 cpus, and almost always happens with 4 or more cpus.  Stragely it does eventually boot after many failed attempts.

 

I don't see the problem on an ESXi server so I'm guessing it may point to a hardware problem on my laptop (Late 2016 15" MBP w/ touchbar), but the machine passes all Apple hardware diagnostics.  Is it possible this a known problem with Fusion?  Is it possible to set cpu affinity to prevent Fusion from using certain cpu cores?  I believe I have a directory full of boot failure logs but I forget where they are written.  Should I attach a bunch of them?

Edit:  The same behavior occurs on Fusion 10.1.0 as well as 10.1.1.  It appears that several other people experience the same issue, so it may indeed be a bug in Fusion.

VMware SRM 6.5 failover while a test is running?

Hello folks,

 

The company I work for runs SRM tests successfully into an isolated network.

They leave it running for weeks/months at a time because they like to run other application type tests in there since it is a production duplicate.

 

Question:

If a real DR scenario comes up and need to run a real failover, would it fail if there is an active SRM Test running?

How to upgrade from ESXi 5.5 Enterprise hosts to 6.5

Hi There,

 

We are planning to upgrade our ESXi hosts (15) currently running on vSphere 5.5 with Enterprise license to vSphere 6.5 update1.

As we are aware, Enterprise license model is discontinued and Standard, Enterprise Plus and Enterprise Plus with vSOM are available in 6.x, and, existing active SnS Enterprise licenses are supported till 2020.

We do not want to move to to Enterprise Plus license model at this time, so, Is it possible to upgrade 5.5 Enterprise license to its equivalent license type in 6.5?

Remote backup of vCSA failing after upgrade

Hi everyone,

 

I have two vSphere clusters (Foundation in my test lab and Enterprise Plus in production). I have been running daily backups on the vCenter servers since upgrading to 6.5 months ago. I use the bash script in the VMware documentation. Everything has been going great and backups have been successful. The other day I upgraded the vCSA from 6.5u1c to 6.5u1e (6.5.0.14000). The upgrade itself went OK except for the ability to run remote backups.

 

For my vCSA running in my test lab cluster, nothing has changed. I can still run local backups via the GUI and I can still run remote backups via the script. All is good.

 

For my vCSA running in my production cluster, I can run backups from the GUI. However when I try to run the bash script, the backup starts and then immediately stops. The backup log contains the start of the backup run and then errors indicating authentication errors: I'm no longer getting scheduled backups from my production cluster.

Backup job completion status:

 

To eliminate any potential problems with firewalls, etc, I tried running this locally on the vCSA itself. I got the exact same result. I looked at the /var/log/vmware/vapi/endpoint/endpoint.log and noticed that every time I tried to run the script I got java errors and the message "Failed to create child session with session manager com.vmware.cis.session for session Administrator@VSPHERE.LOCAL".  I've attached a copy of the log messages showing the session messages and java errors that I'm getting.

 

Has anyone had similar problems? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this?

Is Workstation the only container available from vmware?

 

I mean, there is no ESX for Windows, right?

 

Long ago there was vmware GSX server container for Windows, which probably ended when Microsoft started dabbling with HyperV.

 

I really don't want to nest ESXi inside a Workstation.

 

Assuming Workstation is the only container for Windows, can it be managed with vCenter? and allow for vMotion and all?

Esxi host after upgrade unable to add to vCenter, Datastore Conflicts with existing datastore

Today I test out a scenario. I have a vCenter6.5 virtual appliance with 2 esxi hosts 6.5 in a cluster. I remove 1 host from the inventory, then fresh install esxi5.5 but preserve the datastore.

 

Then I upgrade the esxi5.5 host to esxi6.5. The upgraded host is configured back to use the same hostname and ip. 

 

When I want to join the host back to the vCenter in the cluster, I receive this error "datastore conflicts with an existing datastore in the datacenter that has the same url"

 

I tried to unmount the conflict datastore then mount it back, then try to join to center cluster, It show the same error.

 

In the end, I fresh install that esxi host and not preserve the datastore, the esxi host able to join back to the vcenter cluster.

 

From what I understand, after that esxi host removed from the vCenter inventory, all the information on that esxi host should be deleted from the vcenter database. But in this case it seems still remains the data of the hosts removed from the vcenter.

I just upgraded to Fusion 8.5 and now macOS network no longer found on Ubuntu 16.04 and 16.10 images!

I just upgraded my Fusion to 8.5.10 and now I no longer have network access on two images I've been using for over a year which were just fine.

 

Even after I upgraded to High Sierra (10.13.2) everything worked fine.

 

It was only after the Fusion 8.5 that the network started failing.

 

I tried creating new ISO machines from Ubuntu server 16.10 and 16.04 and both fail to detect the network (tried both NAT and Bridge (Autodetect)).

 

What happened?

Can anyone here please assist me in modifying script above to list additional VM information like:

 

VM name, VMDK size and Disk type (Thin/Thick).

Why cannot show the 3rd plugin in vSphere Flex Client?

Hi laurentsd,

 

We recently encountered a tricky customer case, there are three linked multiple vCenters in customer's environment. The problem is our plugin cannot show in one vCenter, but it is normal in other two vCenters. So we collected the logs in that problematic vCenter, then analyzed them and found many same clues like below:

We are curious that why our plugin is filtered out in that vCenter and no other more valuable messages in logs, but we found some SRM issues and we are not sure whether SRM issue is the root cause or the Center itself has some problems.

 

Could you help to check the log for giving your any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Migration from vCloud to Cloud Foundation

Can someone point me to resources that guide migration (upgrade if you will) from vCloud Suite to Cloud Foundation?

 

For example, customer owns vCloud Suite Advanced and wishes to build on this foundation to create a private cloud. They also need NSX and vSAN.

 

Would they ask VMware to apply a fair value of these licenses towards purchase of a Cloud Foundation edition? To be more specific, do vRealize Automation, vRealize Operations, which are bundled in the vCloud Suite, have any value which can be applied to buy (upgrade to) SDDC manager in one of the Cloud Foundation suites?

Not able to access vm labs page itself.

Hi ,

Am not able to access https://labs.hol.vmware.com/HOL/catalogs/  page itself from our office network. Its behind a proxy and accessing the page gives ssl handshake error.

On checking regarding the page on qualys ssl check, its gives ssl handshake issue as well where its not able to connect to server

 

IE gives error as: insecure TLS setting

 

but the same site works if it make it on http

Compact a Ubuntu vm with lvm2 installed

Hello

 

I have a Ubuntu 12.04 virtual machine, running on a host with something like Parallels Bare Metal virtualisation software.

On my Ubuntu I had LVM (lvm2) installed, I don't know why, maybe while installation, I installed it myself through the cd-image I think I don't need that anyway.

I have 1 TB (on a RAID1 disk, so 2 x 1 TB) HDD storage. I use about 40% of it. Last week the vm didn't boot anymore, no way to access the vm anyhow. The support (Host Europe is the provider) told me then, that the disk is full, it needs to be compacted.

They tried but it didn't work. Then they told me, that with LVM (Logical Volume Manager) installed it is not possible to compact this vm. I thought this is due to a restriction in Parallels software, wouldn't be strange then, but they told me, that

there is no virtualisation software at all which can do it!

Now I want to know if really VMware (ESXi or something like this) as well cannot compress/compact/shrink/defragment (however one would name it) a Ubuntu 12.04 vm with installed LVM.

This would mean, that such vm cannot be used for longer, as the hdd will once be full, how big it is and then no compaction would be possible. I wonder that I don't find any really big issues about this in the net.

Sample script to mount lvm volumes

I have attached two simple scripts to show how you can use vmware-mount on Linux to open LVM volumes.

 

lvmMount.sh is a barebones script to mount lvm disks. Basic idea is simple, vmware-mount on Linux allows you to mount a VMDK in flat mode. Using this, we mount all the disks in an LVM physical group in flat mode. We can then use LVM to scan for volume groups, activate the volume group of interest and mount the volume.

 

lvmCreate.sh is another barebones script to test the lvmMount.sh. It creates 2 disks, makes a group out of these, creates a volume, mounts it and copies a test file into the volume.

 

I have hardcoded many parameters and removed any error checking to show the sequence of commands.  I don't claim to be a Linux/Scripting expert, please feel free to comment.
