vMotion not showing available hosts

$

0

I've just completed an upgrade from 3 x ESXi 5.0 hosts and a vCenter 5.1 appliance (Essentials Plus) to ESXi 6.0.5050593 and VCSA 6.5.5973321. This is a fully supported VMware setup. I upgraded the licenses and applied them to the new setup ok.

One very strange observation is that when I try and vmotion a VM to another host, if I select 'Change compute resource only', invariably the only destination host I'll see is the host the VM is currently running on - no other cluster hosts will show. If though, I select 'Change both compute resource and storage', I can expand the cluster and see all hosts. This method of migrating the VM will work, but I have to 'fake' a datastore change selection.

Things I've verified are;

It happens in both the Flash and HTML UI's.

Sometimes I will see all the migration hosts, but not all the time and very inconsistently

The message pre-migration will always show 'Compatability checks succeeded'.

I thought initially it was out of date VMware Tools, and it certainly looked more promising when tools was updated to 10.0.9 (build 10249), but then it all seemed to revert back and the same things happen. Is this a bug? I know I'm not running the latest ESXi version, or even the latest build of ESXi 6.0, but I'm not quite ready for that yet. It never happened in 5.x.

Ideas?

Thanks

Instant clones and Win10 activation -help needed

$

We have a secure (no internet access) lab environment setup to test and validate a HorizionView VDI deployment of Win10 clients.

Our issue is activation of the Win10 clients as they require re-activation every time we logoff because we are using instant clones.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to resolve this? Here are the options we are considering and issues as we understand them:

  1. Setup a KMS server
    1. Requires a Volume license, which is doable
    2. Documentation says we must have a minimum of 25 hosts, we don' have that in our lab
  2. Use our MSDN account
    1. No support for Win10 KMS license
    2. No support for MKS activation
  3. Manually activate each time
    1. Gonna spend a lot of time on the phone
    2. Win10 has no grace period so machines are crippled w/o activation

Anyone have a thought or suggestions? I'm hoping I missed something.

Full disclosure - I also posted on a windows forum to cover my bases.

Thanks

Default printer is not remembered in VDI

Hi,

we have vmware vSphere6 and VDI desktop infrastructure. Every time user loggs in into VDI his default printer is not the printer which it made default in previous login. Vm pool is Automated Desktop Pool with source vCenter (linked clone). This happens on win8 or win10, it doesn't matter.

I found this in discussion:

I found the sollution eventually.

Its realated to the "network location awareness" service

2 options:

[s]1. (for every user) disable the "Network Location Awareness" Service in the services console and include it in your gold image

(i believe its related to: every guest generates there own network ID, if the ID is different NLA sets the default printer to the system default (which in my case is the PDF creator)[/s] (sorry guys, this was NOT the sollution)

2. If you do not want to disable the NLA service,  Do it on a per-user base in the current user registry (see below)

Create a Key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers ... named: Defaults

Then create an entry (string value): Disabled and set it to: 1

--- printer_per_user.reg ----

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Defaults]
"Disabled"="1"

but registry editing and disabling service didn't helped. Any more ideas?

I need redirect Appdata\local for user because I save config programs data.

My version of Horizon is 7.3 and when redirect appdata\local with Persona Management, it does of windows logon is 90-120 seconds. If to same VM, I don't redirect appdata\local, it does logon in 5-10 seconds.

I tested all configurations in Persona Management Policies and non has worked.

The issue only happens with windows 10, with windows server 2012 r2 works fine.

Exist solution? exist some software redirect appdata\local without slow logons?

Many thanks community!!

How many VMs per ESXi?

$

Hi,

Is there any calculator to give an estimate of how many VMs (2 vCPU/4G memory) can be run in their full capacity simultaneously on a ESXi 5.5 Host (without any fail-over consideration that is no DRS and no HA) with the following detail:

Dell PowerEdge M630

36 CPUs x 2.294 GHz

2 Processor Sockets

18 Cores per Sokect

72 Logical Processors

524GB RAM

This is for visualizing Kiosks estimation.

Thank you

Dell 9560 - linux mint 18.2 - workstation 14pro - yubikey 4c not available.

Hello,

I'm running Linux mint 18.2 on my Dell XPS 9560 and VMware workstation 14 won't see my Yubikey 4c.

When I plug the device into my laptop the host OS picks it up, but doesn't seem to allow the option to connect to a new device. I've tried with a few different VM's running different OS's, but I'm having no luck.

I spoke to Yubikey support who advised adding a couple of lines into the .vmx file, but this hasn't helped. I have tried plugging other devices into my USB-C port, they are picked up and available to pass through to the guest OS.

Yubikey support advise it looks like a VMware issue, but I suspect it's a either the yubikey, or my host OS, however it would be good to confirm it's not VMware workstation.

Any assistance welcome.

Thanks.

VMs power on unexpectently

Can anyone help me understand why several VMs power on unexpectedly after i Guest shutdown or power off?

I've ran out of ideas. There is no autostart configured on the host or vCenter. I've checked View Manager for power settings on the remote desktops. I've tried re-registering the VM and teh esxi host again but no joy.  There are no gaps or anything apparent in the vmx files. Its a real pain - pse help.

I'm running esxi v6.0Up1 on a single host managed by vCenter (don't ask) so I can run 8 VDI desktops with dedicated NVIDIA GPU for a unique use case.   The VMs were in a vApp container until i found out that Horizon doesn't support vApps so could it be that a config setting is causing this issue??

Configure Scanner Redirection defaults

$

I have scanner redirection set up and it is working with a local scanner (Fujitsu 6130s, & 7160s)

My problem is that when a user scans from Adobe Acrobat Pro DC the scanner does not default to Duplex. I have determined that if I get the scanner redirection settings dialog box to show I can configure duplex scanning to work but only for that one session.

1) Does the Scanner Redirection GP allow you to configure this?

2) Can I capture these settings with UEM?

3) Is it possible to configure this to work so that end users can scan duplex with minimal effort?

From Adobe Acrobat DC I have to do a custom scan, then select the options next to the scanner listed, and select "Show Scanner Native Interface". See image 1

Once I have done that and then click scan the scanner native interface comes up. I can change the settings I want there, and I can save a profile though it does not persist through sign off and sign on. This makes me think the settings are in UEM. See image 2

I usually check registry setting changes via regshot, but I wanted to ask if anyone else has done this. I was not sure if because we are using scanner redirection these settings would be on the thin client or the VM or the user profile.

I read the VMware documentation but their description of the group policy does do not cover this. neither did the content on Scanner Redireciton.

We're using UEM for persisting settings and profile specific data

Hi, I am using VMware-viewagent-6.0.2-2331487.exe and VMware-viewagent-direct-connection-6.0.1-2088845.exe on XP SP3 virtual machines to enable a View Agent Direct-Connection. All of my zero clients are Tera1 with firmware version 4.7.3

The virtual machines are control system operate stations that run 24/7 nearly 365 days a year. We have one annual maintenance shut.

How do I disable the sessionTimeout in registry?

V to V error "unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine"

Hello All

so I am trying to do a V to V migration of a RHEL 5 VM from a ESX4.0 to 6.5 server.

I have done this about 12 times so far and even migrated the (A) version of this VM previously without any issues.

just to be clear we have redundant VM's there is an A server and a B server I successfully migrated the A server a few weeks ago that was running on a different ESX server.

These are the errors i'm getting;

"unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine"

and when I clicked on the (view source details) at the bottom right corner of the converter tool it displayed:

"A general system error occurred: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it"\

I'm running version 6.1.1 of the conversion tool

and I was able to V to V another VM from that same ESX server earlier.

any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hello everybody,

We are using Horizon Client 4.0 from a MacBook and when we are connected to a remote app, mouse is going crazy.

It clicks and move alone without any interaction with the MacBook cursor.

On our Windows OS we've got no problem.

So I try with the Blast and PCoIP protocol, we get the same behavior, we try to update clients with the 2018 version and it's the same.

Some users are using DrCleaner on MacOS to clean some RAM and problem seems to disappear.

We get this behavior on all MacOS device.

Someone could help me ?

Thank you in advance,

Idea / Feature Suggestion: Useful to have vmdk disks, usually SCSI / SATA / IDE, make possible for mounting as USB disk as well

Re: Idea / Feature Suggestion: Useful to have vmdk disks, usually SCSI / SATA / IDE, make possible for mounting as USB disk as well

I thought it would be more correct if I create this posting above as an idea here, pardon for the repetition.

I am a happy user of Workstation for over a decade, since days of I think version 4 workstation.

Recently, began to use Tails Linux https://tails.boum.org/ and of course it works with Workstation 12 pro.

But I had been only booting up Tails using ISO image live CD mode. In this mode it can not create a persistent file to store some info or settings. As result I am using vmware snapshots to store.

Tails only creates persistence file to store info when it boots up using USB thumb drive. Yes, I had been able to use USB thumb drive and booted up in EFI BIOS mode in vmware too. But I have to physically plug in a USB thumb drive too.

It is kind of good if VMware will allow a vmdk file virtual disk - same as those we connected via SATA / SCSI, to be also simulated to be (HOT) plugged into VMs. Then in this case it will become very convenient.

I think for more than just Tails purpose, if VMware could hot-plug VMDK disks as USB device, it serves a whole lot of useful functions for test / development and powerful usages.

There are physical USB HDD SSD and there are physical USB thumb drives. I suppose VMDK files can simulate them, but I can be ignorant or wrong.

My suggestion is to have essentially thumb drives / SDcards / MicroSD cards simulated by VMware using a VMDK like file / files, this will be a new dimension of simulation that is still a lacking now.

Thanks & regards

Dynamic Input Values Based on other Inputs

$

Hi,

My Orchestrator server has multiple domains connected. I want to create a workflow that searches one domain for a user, presents a list of users. When a user is selected, the workflow will create a user in the other domain based on the selected user. While googling how to search for a user and get a list presented I came across this Dynamic Input Values Based on other Inputs which basically does what I want. When I run this workflow, it only searches the default domain which is not the one I want to search. I guess I could change what is the default domain, but I´m unsure if that will brake anything else, so I am looking for a solution that will allow me to search the domain of my choice.

I´m not a programmer or very experienced at scripting, but trying to learn. Please keep this in mind.

Orchestrator version is 6.0.5. If this easier done in a later version, please let me know what version and how this is solved in that version.

Thanks in advance!

cisco 4500 vss and vmw

$

Hello all.

This is fifth day that I'm trying to solve how to correct configure vmware and cisco vss with lacp. (Previously I tried to use etherchannel with the same effect) Also other LACP groups (not with vmware works perfectely on this vss switches.

I configured two channel-groups for each server connected to cisco and when I enable interfaces in this groups on second standby switch, I loose connectivity to one of the virtual machines, I can connect to it from one server but not from another so lacp not working as expected.

What i missed in configuration. Any help will be very helpful. Below my configuration.

So I have cisco 4500x in vss configuration with vsl links (Active/Standby), I configured port-channels and aggregate two pairs of interfaces with corresponding channel-groups for hosts connected to them:

interface Port-channel5

switchport

switchport trunk allowed vlan 200

switchport mode trunk

mtu 9000

spanning-tree portfast trunk

spanning-tree bpduguard enable

!

interface Port-channel7

switchport

switchport trunk allowed vlan 200

switchport mode trunk

mtu 9000

spanning-tree portfast trunk

spanning-tree bpduguard enable

interface TenGigabitEthernet1/1/5

description dell1.eth1

switchport trunk allowed vlan 200

switchport mode trunk

mtu 9000

channel-protocol lacp

channel-group 5 mode active

spanning-tree portfast trunk

spanning-tree bpduguard enable

interface TenGigabitEthernet1/1/7

description dell2.eth1

switchport trunk allowed vlan 200

switchport mode trunk

mtu 9000

channel-protocol lacp

channel-group 7 mode active

spanning-tree portfast trunk

spanning-tree bpduguard enable

interface TenGigabitEthernet2/1/5

description dell1.eth2

switchport trunk allowed vlan 200

switchport mode trunk

mtu 9000

shutdown

channel-protocol lacp

channel-group 5 mode active

spanning-tree portfast trunk

spanning-tree bpduguard enable

interface TenGigabitEthernet2/1/7

description dell2.eth2

switchport trunk allowed vlan 200

switchport mode trunk

mtu 9000

shutdown

channel-protocol lacp

channel-group 7 mode active

spanning-tree portfast trunk

spanning-tree bpduguard enable

When ports enabled I get the following status for the ports:

Te1/1/5   dell1.eth1         connected    trunk        full a-1000 1000BaseT

Te1/1/7   dell2.eth1         connected    trunk        full a-1000 1000BaseT

Te2/1/5   dell1.eth2         connected    trunk        full a-1000 1000BaseT

Te2/1/7   dell2.eth2         connected    trunk        full a-1000 1000BaseT

Po5                          connected    trunk      a-full a-1000

Po7                          connected    trunk      a-full a-1000

Also I have two hosts with esxi 6.5, and there I configured vDS with LACP group

here is LAG config:

both hosts connected to upstream switch with LAG

host1:

host2:

Portgroup:

And some outputs from esxi state lacp:

and also question why Admin Key and Oper Key the same on differents hosts in LACP group?
