Good morning community!
I have been tasked with building out a new vSphere vSan Cluster which consist of 8 hosts with all flash drives for both the capacity and caching tiers. I'm going with the RAID 5/6 erasure coding option. My understanding is that this configuration should allow be to tolerate two failures, regardless of if the failures are host based or drive based or a combination of the two. We chose this configuration because we didn't want to chew up our disk space by using the RAID 1 option.
Here's my question:
If I go with this configuration do all of my VMs have to have the same policy? Can I have some VMs configured to use a RAID 1 policy and some to use a RAID 6 policy? The reason that I'm asking is that this will be a shared environment with some very critical VMs and some non-critical VMs. I want to make sure that I'm setting the policies correctly to allow for the most resiliency, (failures), for my most critical workloads.
Setting up vSAN seems simple enough but this SPBM thing is quite confusing.
Any help provided will be most appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
vSAN Newbie
