I plan on building a large virtual lab in which I'd like to get about 10 or more VMs running simultaneously. The performance of the VMs isn't a real concern though. I was think about either building a new quad core desktop or spending about the same amount of money on an older used Proliant server. My thought was that the proliant might be better for this because of the multiple cores/processors even if they are slower than a new quad core. Am I wrong in thinking this? Also I do want to use VMware workstation not ESX/ESXi so it will be running on top of a linux distro.
