Windows XP will not boot after attempt to boot with USB stick mounted

Hi everyone,

I am running Windows XP with VMware Fusion 4.1.4., OS X Mountain Lion. This VM has been working very reliably. Today, I tried to boot the VM and got an error message that /windows/system/config (or similar) could not be found. I then noticed I had a USB stick mounted that I is not usually there when I start up Windows. So I shut down the VM, removed the stick, and try to restart, but now it's just stuck at the screen "VMWARE -- Press F2 to enter SETUP etc." (see attachment). If I press ESC or F2, nothing happens. I cannot even see the original error message (hence the uncertainty about which Windows file exactly VMware could not find).

Any advice is much appreciated. I really need to rescue the data from this VM -- but it's not just files, it's rather complex data structures that are hidden within a program that runs on the VM. Ideally I would find a way to repair the VM.

Thanks much in advance.

K
