Picture gets smaller on resolution changes in stretched guest full screen

A bug that has been around a while but persists in VMware Workstation 9.0.2 concerns using full screen mode with "stretch guest" option enabled in Workstation's display settings. If the guest system changes display mode or resolution, the display frame within the Workstation's full-screen window will get progressively smaller every time.

I have one particular application (guest is Windows 98 SE, but the bug is guest-OS-independent) which on start-up tries to find an optimal display resolution, and in doing so switches resolutions several times in a row. I start with Windows' desktop all stretched to my host's full-screen Workstation window. Every time the application switches resolutions, the host's picture of the guest desktop gets smaller when it reappears, until when the program finally starts, the desktop is about the size of a post stamp, even if the guest's resolution is much larger.

This can always be fixed by leaving and re-entering Workstation's full-screen mode, i.e. by pressing Host+Enter twice in a row. When the full screen view opens up again, the guest display will be stretched to full-screen again.

Is this an actual core bug or is there a way to configure it away?
