fusion does not recognize vm for import

$

I had issues with the upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro, so I did a clean install of Yosemite. I'm re-installing the apps and just installed Fusion 7.1.0. When I try to import my VM (it has Windows XP), however, Fusion seems not to recognize it; it remains grayed out and I cannot select it for import (see attached picture). Note that Fusion does label the VM with a relevant icon. This behavior persists even after rebooting my Mac.

Any suggestions for how to get Fusion to work with this VM? It was working fine under Yosemite before the clean install.

Thanks,

Hershel

Force a USB hasp to connect to a specific VM at startup

$

I am running VMware Workstation 10. I have a USB hasp that is plugged into the host and is required for licensing of a specific application installed on one of my VM's. Once I log into my VM, I can manually attach the USB hasp. However, if I log off of the VM, the USB hasp will disconnect, thus requiring me to log in and manually attach again. If I simply lock my session on the VM, it will stay connected, but I would prefer not to remain logged in to this VM as it needs to be accessed by other users. If I reboot the VM and host, I am required to manually connect the hasp again. Is there any way that I can force this USB hasp to automatically connect to this specific VM after a reboot? Also, is there anyway that I can ensure that the USB hasp stays connected even if I log off of the guest VM?

Any help is VERY much appreciated!

vSphere Web Client SUCKs so bad that my experience managing and supporting VMware has turn to SH**!

Yes - that's what I said - this has gone far enough and its time the user community took a stand to let VMware know how horrible the web client is, it is tantamount to my worst user interface experience in 20 years of IT.

Attention VMware - this is really simple - all the money you wasted developing this could have been spent in other areas.  you are forcing GARBAGE on your customer base, and for that you will eventually crash and burn, its only a matter of time.  Hasn't the thousands upon thousands of posts about this sunk in yet??  Hello?

Purpose of this post is simple and obvious...  please refrain from your A** kissing pitch about cloud this and that... don't need to hear it.    and I could care less about managing a complex infrastructure from an android or ipad, its ridiculous to expect someone to squeeze the mountains of information that needs to be at your finger tips quickly to efficiently manage a VMware infrastructure on a tiny screen...

If I wasn't totally pissed off with having to use this client I wouldn't have posted this VENTING..

Cannot pint or RDP to VM

Hi,

I'm not really sure how to go about troubleshooting this. So, if you could help me point to the right direction, that'd be great.

I'm working on a work laptop running Windows 7 (64-bit). Let's say the hostname is win7 and it's ip address is 10.111.112.xx. This machine is part of a workgroup.

I have access to VMware View (I believe it's version 5). I've created a VM through vSphere client 5. The VM is running Windows Server 2008 R2. It's joined to a domain instead of a workgroup (unlike my laptop). The ip address of this VM would be 10.111.113.xx. Notice that it's ip address is just in a different subnet.

I'm not able to ping the VM from my laptop. So, obviously I'm unable to RDP as well. However, from the VM I can ping my laptop. Right now the only way I can access/use the VM is via "Console" in vSphere client, which is not really ideal for regular work.

Would you be able to help with this issue? Basically, I'd like to be able to RDP to that VM from my laptop to work on it. Where's the issue?

Boomerang to beam your VMs

$

Recently I got an opportunity to take BoomerangTM for a spin. I wasn’t familiar with the product prior to this opportunity. Boomerang allows you to move your VMware vSphere workloads to Amazon AWS. It allows you to do the following:

  1. Move your load to AWS
  2. Use AWS as a DR or backup
  3. Bring your load back from AWS to your vSphere environment

Boomerang has a very simple deployment, perhaps which would explain the absence of countless PDFs on their website. The steps to get going are simple. You will need the following:

  1. A vSphere environment
  2. An AWS account
  3. Connectivity between 1 and 2

OS questions Help please!

New as new can be here! I have questions that I suppose most just assume I should know. I have purchased VMware workstation to help me keep all my programs that run on different OS easier to access and not make my PC lug so.  When I create a virtual machine it asks me for my OS of that I have selected, I suppose my question is where can I get the OS from?  This is total confusion!

Vmware player totally freezing Ubuntu

$

It used to work perfectly well but at some point it became almost unusable - I'm running Windows 8.1 guest on Ubuntu 14.10 host (vmplayer 7.0, attaching about screenshot).

It is i7 with 8 gigs of ram, 2x SSD (windows guest on dedicated SSD), nVidia NVS 5400M, original nvidia driver).

At some point cpu usage increases dramatically without me doing anything in guest and just stays high.

It's impossible to use host or guest (I can't even switch KDE or Windows' windows, the graphical UI just freezes).

Even if I try to SSH to the machine, it is also horribly slow (it takes an minute to login).

TOP reveals vmware-vmx and xorg cpu usage very high.

If I strace, I can see many "resource temporarily unavailable" errors, I guess that could be the reason for lockups (see attached files)

Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong? :-S

I'm trying to use the VSM 9.1 Web Service API with Powershell, however when I run the New-WebServiceProxy cmdlet it throws an error, the inner exception being "Method InfraAPI.KnowledgeUpdate can not be reflected.", and as such I'm unable to proceed any further with development.

Here's the Powershell output:

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

VMware Security Analytics

It seems that Vmware does not have a security analytics product.  The have Operations Manger which does analytics on performance, anomolies and the like.  Log insight can correlate syslog events, but isn't designed for security analytics.
What product(s) might I add to my vCloud Suite for security analytics and how do they integrate with the vCloud Suite in general?

Can't login with Local accounts using View Direct Connection plugin into RDS Pool

$

I have installed the Horizon View Agent (6.0.0) and View Direct Connection Plugin (6.0.0) on a physical server running Windows Server 2012 R2 with Remote Desktop Services enabled. I point my Windows View Client (2.3.0) directly to the Windows Server and I can connect to a remote desktop session using Domain Accounts, but I can not connect to a remote desktop session using local accounts. I get the error message "You are not entitled to use this system”.   I have added the local accounts to the View Agent Direct Connection User group, but that didn’t help. At the LOG IN prompt in the Windows View client there is a drop down menu for the Domain, I see my domain and the hostname of the Windows Server 2012 R2.  I have looked though the "View Agent Direct-Connection Plug-In Administration VMware Horizon 6.0"  PDF manual and it says to start the Server Manager and navigate to Remote Desktop Services to configure entitlements.   I don't see any options there to manage the entitlements.   Does anyone have any ideas how to manage the entitlements in Server 2012 R2?

Growing VMFS datastore with running VM

$

Hey, gents.

Have a quick question. We have improperly provisioned VMFS datastore on production VM, basically, SAN LUN size is 1.99TB and virtual disk was created as thin provisioned and 2TB.

vSphere shows no free space. I am planning to grow datastore, we found 100GB additionally on SAN and I an add it from vSphere.

I am just not sure, do we need to shutdown VM to perform this change?

I guess no, because Guest OS should see no changes - disk stays 2TB, changes will happen only on vSphere level.

If I understand correct VMware documents about VMFS, one of the main benefits of VMFS is:

http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vmfs-best-practices-wp.pdf

Facilitates Dynamic Growth

Through the use of a volume management layer, VMFS enables an interface to storage resources so that several

types of storage (Fibre Channel, iSCSI and FCoE) can be presented as datastores on which virtual machines can

reside. Enabling dynamic growth of those datastores through aggregation of storage resources provides the

ability to increase a shared storage resource pool without incurring downtime.

Does it mean that I don't have to Shutdown Guest OS to perform this type of changes?

Thank you in advance!

P2V of disk with multiple partitions

Hello,

I'm working on a customer to convert his physical servers to vSphere 5.5 infrastructure.

I'm using converter 5.5 and have problems P2Ving one windows 2003 server with system disk with 2 partitions (C and E).

Physical Server

physical_disks.jpg

Disk 2: system disk with 2 partitions (C:, E: )

Vmware Converter

converter.jpg

I have converted in following way:

Partition C:, G:, F: together

Partition E: standalone (converter 5.5 doesn’t support conversion of multiple partitions on the same disk).

Result is I have one virtual machine with 3 vmdk (disks C, G, F) and another “fake” virtual machine with only one vmdk (disk E).

I have moved the disk E vmdk to the folder of the “real” vm and added it to the virtual machine.

Boot.ini file is as following:

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Standard" /fastdetect

When I boot the virtual machine, I see the boot.ini menu, but the system doesn’t start and loop forever to boot menu.

Can anyone help me ?

thanks in advance

Best regards

Davide

Any downsides to using Round Robin?

$

I'm setting up a new vSphere 5.5 environment using HP P4500G2 and P4530 iSCSI storage. The default path selection is fixed and I was thinking about changing it to round robin for a potential performance gain. Is there any downside to doing this in my situation or anything I need to check out first?

Starting a VM in VMware Workstation at system startup via VIX and accessing the console

$

SI need to start a VM using VMware Workstation 7.1 on a Windows server 2008 R2 host.

To solve my issue I use Task Scheduled with a command file based on VMware VIX conteining a line like:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware VIX\vmrun" start "c:\vm_folder\vm_name.vmx"

The task is started using the Administrator's credentials.

When the host starts the task is executed and the guest VM starts.

However, when I logon as Administrator, open VMware Workstation ans try to access the console of the guest VM I get a message saying that:

This virtual machine appears to be in use.

If this virtual machine is already in use, press the "Cancel" button to avoid damaging it. If this virtual machine is not in use, press the "Take Ownership" button to obtain ownership of it.

This virtual machine appears to be in use.

Configuration file: vm_name.vmx

If I try to take ownership I get a message like:

Taking ownership of this virtual machine failed.

The virtual machine is in use by an application on your host computer.

Configuration file: vm_name.vmx

I need to start the guest VM at host startup but I need to access it during execution.

How can I use VMware VIX or any other tool to automate startup and to be able to use access the console while the VM is running?

Regards

marius
